Come work remotely with E&LP! If you are being asked to return to the office, don’t. Come work with us. At E&LP, we embrace a flexible work environment and welcome employees seeking work from home (WFH) opportunities, such as E&LP Senior Staff Engineer, Amanda Slominski, who will be working from Florida this coming winter.

Can you provide more details about your upcoming experience, such as how it was set up?

Amanda: I knew we had the capability of working remotely and hitting our deadlines, coordinating with other subconsultants, and just overall getting our work done. When the opportunity to move to Florida for the winter came up, I figured it could not hurt to ask. We were able to work remotely from other areas in the country for short periods, but I was not sure how a more long-term remote working request would be received. My direct manager was very receptive and worked with me to figure out the details before bringing it up to the other managers. Everyone has been really supportive, and I am really excited!

What challenges do you foresee facing and overcoming?

Amanda: I think the biggest challenge I will face is not seeing my coworkers face to face every day. It was definitely really great to come back into the office after being fully remote, not just for work but for social activities as well. The random banter throughout the day will be missed, but I have occasionally sat on Zoom with a coworker while we worked, so I will likely be sending out random Zoom invites from time to time.

Another challenge would be missing out on networking events in this area. It’s too early to tell if events will permanently be a hybrid model or if they will slowly transition back to fully in-person. On the bright side, being in a new area and meeting new people will expand my network in ways I could not only being in Philadelphia.

What were the benefits?

Amanda: A huge benefit in having the option to work remotely is maintaining a good work/life balance. I know for some people it has caused the opposite effect in the sense that your computer is always with you, and in some scenarios, you share your work space and sleeping space. For me, however, it has provided opportunities to see family members, friends, explore new areas, and get my work done without burning through my vacation days.

Why would other people work for E&LP based upon your experience?

Amanda: It is really great to have the flexibility to work remotely when you want as well as come into the office and experience office culture. My coworkers and I struck a great balance with it where either option is easily accessible. Management is really supportive and will take the time to work with you. I am really grateful for the opportunity to move away for half the year without hindering my professional growth.
