E&LP is continuing the tradition of shedding light on the historic achievements made in the AEC industry by the Black community for this year’s Black History Month. We are proud to share more key figures to acknowledge and celebrate:

Walt Braithwaite is a Jamaican American engineer who earned his engineering degree and began his career at Boeing in 1966. There, he became the senior engineer responsible for developing CAD/CAM, a computer software widely used for product design. During his tenure, he became the highest-ranking Black executive and president of Boeing Africa.

Howard P Grant, 1925-1997, was the first African American student to graduate with his Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkley in 1948. In that same year, he also became the first Black member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), being an inspiration and mentor to Black and Minority Ethnic individuals throughout the county.

George Biddle Kelley, 1884-1962, became the first African American Engineer to register with the State of New York after graduating from Cornell University. He later became employed by the New York Engineering Department where he worked on the New York State Canal System, later selected as a National Historic Landmark in 2016.

We lift up their stories and express gratitude for their incredible contributions that have played a vital role in advancing our profession.
