As part of a monthly monitoring schedule, team members out of the Philadelphia office, Clare Moriarty and Jake McGillen, visited Temple University’s East Park Canoe House stormwater bioretention basin to collect data as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Small Business Innovation Research Program Grant. The overall project goal is to develop an engineered soil product and process that repurposes waste-stream glass into soil suitable for horticultural and green infrastructure projects. E&LP’s role is to observe and record multiple parameters related to stormwater management to determine the effectiveness of the glass-based soil mix in regard to drainage, water quality, and plant health. If the glass-based bioretention mix demonstrates efficacy, then this could be a more sustainable solution to sand-based mixes for future projects.
