The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a great network for future engineers at the collegiate level and professional engineers of all stages looking to develop their careers. Some of our staff have chosen to take advantage of this resource and can testify of its benefits. Also, SWE has worked alongside the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) to publish a study in 2018 on Women of Color in the Engineering Workplace which seeks to understand their experiences and provide strategies to increase diversity, inclusion and belonging in the workplace.
Cultivating an environment that is safe and welcoming for everyone takes intentional investment that can look like offering internal and external resources for development tailored to each unique experience. Even small practices like making space for everyone in the room to speak can make a great impact.
