E&LP diligently continues its groundwater remediation work at the Former St. Mary’s Hospital in Passaic, NJ. A large mass of No. 6 fuel oil is located in the groundwater within the fractured bedrock below the site. The first phase of remediation includes using long-depth belt product recovery, followed by dual-phase water/product recovery with in-well heating, to make the product less viscous.

Last month, the final components of an Abanaki belt skimmer recovery system were installed and the system is currently operating. Operation and maintenance for this system involves entering into permitted confined spaces, which are represented by three 5’ x 5’ concrete vaults that house the treatment system at each recovery well. We predict the flowable portion of the product will be recovered after 6 months of active remediation.  Once the free-flowing product is mitigated, we will have achieved the technical weight of evidence obligations to support the pursuit of a Technical Impracticability (TI) Waiver with a Groundwater Remedial Action Permit.
