E&LP was engaged to complete construction documentation, construction administration, permitting, and site survey. By integrating stormwater structures into site elements, stormwater runoff was able to be reduced; detention basins were included under the playground, accepting runoff from roof drains and the site. The synthetic turf field incorporated a large detention basin into its substructure, further increasing storage capacity. Working closely with the environmental engineers, E&LP developed a strategy to allow for stormwater storage within the constraints of a contaminated site.
The exterior play area is designed to serve as a communal space, serving as a gathering and staging area for students before school and a play area for recreational use. To address safety concerns, a security fence surrounds the perimeter of the facility. In the public areas along Seaman Ave, an ornamental security fence provides security without being intrusive. Exterior site lighting provides a safe learning environment, even during after-hours activities.
