Paterson awards $722,000 contract for Great Falls River Walk

E&LP is the prime design consultant for the Quarry Lawn and Walk Project (QLRWP), which will enhance the Paterson Great Falls National Historic Park along the Passaic River. On the grounds of a Quarry and the Allied Textile Printing (ATP) site, this space is directly adjacent to Overlook Park, which provides scenic views of the Paterson Great Falls. QLRWP will be home to a new visitor center for the National Historical Park and its historically significant industrial buildings.

Known as the Quarry Lawn site, the project location is the former location of Mount Morris which was quarried away over time to produce stone for the road base used throughout Paterson as well as to make way for several buildings related to the textile manufacturing process, some of which remain on site as ruins.

The site is a rich confluence of natural systems and archaeological remains from an important manufacturing period of United States history. Important historic elements such as walls, circulation patterns, windows, and access to the river will be maintained and integrated with new park elements such as planting and seating. Overall, the park will pay deference to it historic character while introducing a modern layer of amenities for public use.

In addition to the ruins that have been partially overtaken by vegetation, the sixty foot tall quarry face itself remains as a striking remnant and artifact of the former industrial heritage of the site. E&LP is working with the City of Paterson and the National Park Service to develop the Quarry Lawn into a public park that will simultaneously honor, restore, and preserve aspects of the historic remnants on the property while making the site safe and accessible for new passive uses, events, and programs.
